Why Therapy Isn’t About Being ‘Broken

One of the most common reasons people hesitate to start therapy is the fear that it means something is “wrong” with them. That they’re broken, weak, or failing in some way. But therapy is not about fixing broken people; it’s about understanding, growth, and reconnecting with the parts of ourselves that may have been neglected or hurt.

How Relational Therapy Can Heal

Many people come to therapy expecting advice or solutions, but what they often find is something more subtle and powerful: a relationship that helps them feel seen, accepted, and understood in a way that can be deeply healing.

Grief After a Breakup

A Personal and Professional View

Breakups are often minimised in our culture, but the grief they bring can be profound. As someone who has both experienced and supported others through the heartbreak of relationship loss, I know that what you’re feeling is valid, and you’re not alone.

Gentle support through life’s turning points

Helping you feel steady, heard, and supported — whatever you're facing.

My Purpose

To offer a grounded, relational space

Therapy should feel like an anchor, where you feel seen and supported, especially during times of uncertainty, grief, or emotional overwhelm.

To help you make sense of your story

Together, we explore your inner world at your pace, with curiosity and care, past and present, in a way that feels empowering and real.

To walk alongside you

Whether you're navigating life’s turning points, loss, relationship changes, or deeper questions of identity, you don’t have to do it alone.

Our Objectives

To provide quality, integrative psychotherapy

No one-size-fits-all; therefore, each session is tailored to your unique needs, drawing from a range of therapeutic approaches to support you as a whole person.

To create a safe, inclusive environment

Where you can speak freely without judgment, as safety is at the heart of every session.

To support long-term growth

Therapy isn't just about getting through the hard times — it's also about discovering what else is possible, with healing and self-understanding.

FAQ

There is a lot more we have to offer!

What happens in the first session?

The first session is a gentle starting point. It's a chance for the client to talk about what’s brought them to therapy, ask any questions, and get a feel for how Sarah-Jane works. There’s no expectation to share everything right away, the pace is always guided by what feels safe and manageable. It’s also a time to start building a trusting and collaborative relationship.

Do I need to have a specific issue to start therapy?

Not at all. Some people come to therapy with something very clear in mind — a loss, a transition, or a relationship difficulty. Others arrive with a general feeling that something isn’t quite right, or a desire to understand themselves more deeply. Therapy can support people through many stages of life, whether or not there's a specific “problem” to solve.

What if I feel nervous or unsure?

It’s completely normal to feel nervous before starting therapy, especially if it’s a new experience. Sarah-Jane works in a way that’s warm, respectful, and non-judgmental, creating space for clients to move at their own pace. There’s no right or wrong way to “do therapy”; just showing up and being open is a brave and valuable first step.

How long will therapy take?

Therapy doesn’t follow a set timeline. Some clients find a few sessions helpful to gain clarity or work through a specific issue, while others benefit from longer-term support. At Anchoring Therapy, the process is open-ended and led by the client’s needs. Regular check-ins help to review progress and make sure the work continues to feel helpful.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes, Sarah-Jane offers a free, no-obligation 15-minute phone consultation. This is a chance to ask questions, get a sense of what therapy might be like, and see whether it feels like a good fit before booking a full session.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes. Everything shared in sessions is treated with the utmost respect and confidentiality. There are a few rare exceptions where confidentiality may need to be broken for safety reasons (such as risk of harm to self or others), and these will be explained clearly at the start.

A little about me...

Before setting up my private practice, I spent time working with various community charities, which I still support today, offering counselling support to people experiencing grief, trauma, and isolation. My work included online therapy and face-to-face sessions, often for individuals navigating intense periods of loss or life-changing dynamics. These experiences continue to shape the compassion and flexibility I bring to my work today.
As part of my postgraduate studies in Psychology, I carried out research exploring the emotional and relational experiences of adult children from blended families. This work gave me a deep appreciation for the complexities of family systems, especially where roles, boundaries, and attachment histories can feel unclear or conflicted.
